One of the more extraordinary locations I have actually ever been has to be Astoria, Oregon. There are numerous fascinating things to see and the setting could not be more lovely. The magnificent Columbia river ends it's 1,243 mile journey here as it meets the Pacific Ocean. Downtown Astoria hugs the waterside and its high streets and areas increase precipitously from the river and carpet Coxcomb hill.





Today you will visit a Norwegian founded fishing town called Petersburg which is discovered on Mitkof Island. You will be entertainedby the Leikarring Dancers who will carry out traditional Norwegian dances in conventional dress. You will be able to explore this fishing neighborhood and sample some homemade Norwegian pastries.

Cruise into the Chukchi and cross the arctic circle where it converges the Worldwide date line. You can see humpbacks, grays, orcas and bowhead whales. This is a day of relaxation and enjoying this amazing sea.

Generally speaking, the longer your journey, the much better the fishing, due to the fact that the boats can invest more time traveling to the better fishing areas. Typically in summer, however, the 1/2 day and 3/4 day boats fish side by side. The boats all have galleys that offer and prepare food, normally breakfasts, sandwiches, or burgers and candy. They also offer sodas ship captains duties and responsibilities and generally beer.

sea captain Rather perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this park though is the shipwreck of the ship Peter Iredale. The skeleton of this big old ship is stuck in the beach sands of Clatsop Spit and it's rusting hulk is quite fascinating to walk up to and observe as the surf crashes on the beach.

Setting sail during fair weather the ship embarked on a new journey of discovery, one that took the crew to incredible new places, full of brand-new sights and brand-new ports of call. Cruising on the high seas the ship and her team collected together wealth in all manner of things; riches from exotic places and memorable destinations from which tall stories arose!

Each piece of sea glass unquestionably has stories to it. Was the piece somebody's pop bottle in the sixties, or was it part of a sea captain's alcohol bottle centuries ago? Possibly some of that old Chesapeake sea glass came blasting out of a local cannon during the Fight of 1812. Possibly a couple of fragments of Caribbean sea glass carry the energy of pirates gathered around a fire, reveling into the night. Then there's sea pottery, fragments of damaged china worn smooth by the sea. Who owned it? Was a teacup tossed intentionally into the waves by a haughty aristocrat, or lost in a shipwreck? We can only hypothesize, however isn't that fun!
